600TH AIR BASE WING

d

The 600th Air Base Wing is stationed at Clark Air Base. The 600th Air Base Wing's task is to operate and maintain base facilities within the total of 313.39 hectares comprising the Clark Special Economic Zone. As of 2009, the Wing hosted 7 major units of the PAF located at Air Force City, Clark Air Base, including the Headquarters of the 1st Air Division.

Clark Air Base was constructed by the US Army in the 1910's and became a major overseas installation before World War II. The US maintained complete control over this and other Philippine bases through a post-war agreement with the Philippine government. On 7 January 7 1979, after various ammendments to basing agreements between the United States and the Republic of the Philippines, ownership of the base was turned over to the Philippine government. As a result of Clark Air Base's new status, the Philippine Air Force became charged with providing base security and various services, and established the Clark Air Base Command for this purpose.

The Military Bases Agreement was not renewed in 1991, and in November 1991, US forces vacated the base and turned it over to complete Philippine control. On 10 January 10, 1993, the 600th Air Base Wing was activated replacing the Clark Air Base Command. The 600th Wing continued to provide base security and a wide variety of ground support services.

In February 2001, as part of a PAF reorganization, the 600th Air Base Wing was inactivated. The 1st Tactical Operations Wing took over at Clark Air Base. In 2007, as part of another PAF reorganization, the 1st TOW was inactivated and the 1st Air Division was reactivated. The 600th Air Base Wing was similarly reactivated as a subordinate unit of the 1st Air Division.
